The
"Associació de Sant Jordi d'Alcoi" (Saint George's Assotiation)
is the one in charge to organize all the events of the Festivities of
Moors and Christians held annually in Alcoi to honour its patron Saint
George.
On the other hand, the Assotiation pretends not only to enliven the cult to the saint Patron, but also to foment the spirit of the festivities, like taking care of Saint George Temple and preserving the traditions that commemorate the battle won by the people of Alcoi against the Moors and their leader Al-Azraq, with the help of the saint. |

| The
Assotiation, as we know it today, is created in 1883 as an evolution of
the formerly called Junta de Devotos del Santo (saint Patron devotes'
assotiation) as it was called in the XVIII century, that afterwards would
be called Junta de Directores del Señor San Jorge, whose first
1839 rules and sessions' registers are conserved. The Assotiation nowadays has more than 14.000 members, becoming the most important organization in Alcoi, whose govern and administration is ruled by the "Junta Directiva", a group of 25 members, one of them a City Hall representative, and the "Asamblea General" (General Assembly) with its 120 members, made up of the presidents from each "filá" *, the Mayorales (people who represent a different range of the cultural and social life in the town), and honour members. There are 28 "filaes" in Alcoi, 14 of them are Christians and 14 are Moors. A "filá" is a group of people, each one with distinguishable clothes, representing the different kind of people and the arabian tribes that took part in the historical battle. |
